Independence Heights: Rebuilding the First Black Municipality in Texas after Hurricane Harvey

In collaboration with Rice University Professor Lacy M. Johnson, The Houston Flood Atlas and University of Houston Graphic Design Program.

The atlas will be a literary and cartographic interpretation of Houston’s floodplains, waterways, reservoirs, and inundated zones. Expressive and informative maps were designed in response to essay contributions by climate scholars, environmentalists, housing activists, architects, urban planners, and poets. Funded through a Public Humanities grant.

Map Excerpt: In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Independence Heights has been working to preserve its history. This map indicates the first residents and public places in Independence Heights, and how the lack of city development of these areas have shaped the neighborhood’s infastructure today.
